Service to Young Life takes many different forms. JB Sanchez’s brief time on staff as an administrative assistant serving the Development department included typical administrative responsibilities; however, his talents as a graphic designer surfaced quickly as people began to utilize his ideas and expertise. JB’s role was uniquely crafted over time in specialized projects that grew out of his supportive relationships with the Development staff. Using his creative eye and graphic design experience is one of the unique examples of connecting gifts and talents with the ministry, even in unsuspecting ways. But, before we go any further, let’s look back to how JB got connected to Young Life in the first place.
JB had an extensive and creative history of service in church planting around the world before being exposed to Young Life through the 2015 family camp at Trail West Lodge. The light-bulb moment came when his family joined others on a field trip to Frontier Ranch to see leaders and campers in action and be a part of that evening’s club. Seeing and hearing the gospel message being shared in a connecting way and learning about each talk’s progression made sense. JB was intrigued by the spirit of excellence demonstrated by the intentionality in how camps are built and how camp staff and crew engage with leaders, campers and guests. Sanchez was challenged to become part of the ministry through relationships developed at the camp because their passion for connecting kids to Christ was infectious. Within a year of going to Trail West, and through a series of not-so-random encounters, JB was able to connect with his local area and take boys to Castaway Club. Following this, he and his wife became volunteer Young Life leaders for a semester and JB was hired to work at the Service Center.
The Service Center staff became an essential spiritual and emotional support to JB’s faith journey and his professional and entrepreneurial gifting. He left Young Life's formal employment during the pandemic in 2020 but continues to serve on a contract basis as needs arise.
Now, a student at Denver Seminary in the Clinical Mental Health program, JB continues to serve the mission in various specialized endeavors that take advantage of his gifts. This very unique use of a gifted individual is a model for us all in cultivating new and creative ways to employ those who do not fit the usual Young Life entry ramp. JB’s willingness to serve and allow God to direct and utilize his gifts inspires us and has brought benefits to the mission. JB, thank you for your service to and through Young Life! We are excited to see how God will continue to direct you in unique and valuable ways for His Kingdom purposes.
