Former Staff, Forever Impactful: Nurturing Young Lives through Transition
March, 2024

From 2019 to 2023, Annie Sheridan took on a transformative role within Young Life, being one of the first to forge a way for young incarcerated girls via the YL ONE ministry. Today, having transitioned off staff, Annie continues her impactful journey, teaching, and staying deeply involved in the initiatives that matter most to her. In the realm of youth ministry, the impact of Young Life goes far beyond the years spent on staff. Annie's story is not just one of transition, but a testament to the enduring commitment of former staff members, contributing significantly to the spirit and mission of Young Life.

Annie began as a part-time staff associate, gradually evolving into the acting Area Director, steering the establishment of the YL ONE ministry in Sheridan, WY. Focused on young women aged 11 to 19, court-ordered for rehabilitation at the Wyoming Girls School, Annie tackled the challenges of addiction and trauma, providing mentorship to young women who needed support. As she developed YL ONE in her area, she also learned that the Young Life Club had to look a little bit different. Recognizing the need for a tailored approach, the traditional club structure was adapted. Songs could trigger trauma, and authentic conversations required careful navigation. Parables became a powerful medium, offering a space for grace, mercy, and redemption.

The establishment of WyldLife, led Annie to make the decision to step away from her staff position. While initially attempting to juggle teaching alongside her part-time staff role, the arrival of a full-time staff member signified to her that it was time for change. Annie recognized that her true strength lay in a supportive capacity. Currently serving as a teacher of PE and Wellness for 6th to 8th graders, she now upholds a dual commitment to both WildLife and YL ONE.

In her support role for WyldLife, she ensures seamless communication with the school she teaches at, assists with financial events, and takes charge of various responsibilities, allowing full-time staff to focus on kids. Her dedication to YL ONE remains unwavering. Despite a brief hiatus, she is planning the annual Dinner Kickstart event in March 2024, aiming to reignite the flame of the ministry and recruit new volunteer leaders. She is hopeful that the ministry will continue to grow as she continues to dedicate her time to these young girls.

In conclusion, Annie's story exemplifies the enduring impact former staff can have within the Young Life community. Annie would humbly admit that she does not see herself volunteering in big ways, but it is easy to see that through her supportive roles, she is allowing current staff to thrive and focus on kids in their area. Like Annie Sheridan, we know that there are many former staff people serving in a myriad of ways, both within and outside Young Life, today.
