25 Years of Young Life in Ukraine

Sasha and Ira were both born in non-believing families during the existence of the Soviet Union, when the whole country was atheistic. Faith in God was persecuted and people who attended churches were considered mentally and morally underdeveloped. Children of believing parents suffered from merciless bullying in all educational institutions. In Ira’s words, “In our families, there was never any mention of faith in God or Christianity in general. We both went through a divorce in early childhood, my parents divorced when I was three years old and Sasha's parents when he was five years old. I had an alcoholic stepfather and Sasha's mother was a single mom raising Sasha and his brother alone.” Sasha and Ira met at school, at only 14 and 15 years old. They dated for several years and made plans for the future. Ira recalled this time and said, “We had no example of a good family and the right relationship between father and mother because all of our friends had similar situations. But God intervened in our life!”
When Sasha and Ira were 17 and 18 years old, they went to the first Young Life camp in Ukraine that happened to be held in their city. For the first time in their lives, Sasha and Ira heard about God's love and the sacrifice of Christ. Ira reflected, “I accepted Christ into my heart on the fourth day of camp and Sasha did a couple of months later. We cut off all connections with our past life. We stopped using alcohol and drugs and stopped hanging around bad influences.” After the camp, in the fall of 1994, Sasha and Ira completely immersed themselves in the Young Life ministry and began to help the team that was starting the club. After several months, Sasha asked the Lord a question about serving Him as his vocation, and God clearly answered that he should be engaged in Young Life and save teenagers like him. Since then, they have never left the ministry. Shortly after that, Sasha and Ira got married and a year after the camp were baptized in the local Baptist church.
As the ministry grew, so did the Utkin family. They had two sons, Sasha and Valentine, and one daughter, Kamila. Early in their marriage, Sasha and Ira lost their oldest son Sasha to cancer at the age of six. Ira reflected on this time saying, “God helped us to traverse this painful and confusing desert and it strengthened our relationship even more. We remained faithful to God and the ministry entrusted to us in Young Life and God blessed us.” The ministry spread from the small town of Chernivtsi throughout Ukraine and currently exists in 24 regions of Ukraine. Through this time, Sasha and Ira started college ministries, Capernaum clubs, YoungLives, WyldLife and ministries to orphans. Ira said, “The Lord also blessed our family six years ago when he gave us the opportunity to adopt four siblings that were left in a shelter after their alcoholic mother was taken away. Our family grew from four to eight in a day, and now three of our kids are married and we have one grandchild!”
The Young Life ministry has existed in Ukraine for 25 years this fall. God continues to bless the Utkin family and give them a great vision for the future. In Ira’s words, “Our desire is to spread Young Life throughout the whole country. For there to be clubs in every city, town, village and school in Ukraine. There are around nine million teenagers in our country and we want to tell all of them about the love and grace of Jesus!” God is using Sasha and Ira to bring hope and healing to thousands of kids across their country. The vision, love and faith they have in God for their country is incredible. As it says in Matthew 9:38, "The harvest is plentiful and the laborers are few, ask the Lord of the harvest to send more laborers." Please pray with us and join us in celebrating God’s faithfulness these past 25 years!
